About Sri Lanka Nestling off the southern tip of India, the tropical island of Sri Lanka has beguiled travellers for centuries with its palm-fringed beaches, diverse landscapes and historical monuments, & a population of nearly 19 million people. Sri Lanka has a pleasant tropical climate. The average temperature of the low lands ranges between 25-30 degrees Celsius. It is a multi-ethnic, multi-religious country with a diverse and rich culture. English is widely spoken and is studied as a compulsory secondary language in school. Extensive faulting and erosion over time have produced a wide range of topographic features, making Sri Lanka one of the most scenic places in the world. Three zones are distinguishable by elevation: the Central Highlands, the plains, and the coastal belt. Sri Lanka is abundant in natural resources, and because of the vast natural beauty coupled with is unique culture and tradition, tourism is one of the greatest sources of revenue for Sri Lanka. To sum it up, honesty, courage and simplicity together with an inborn sense of loyalty characterize the Sri Lankan way of life. |
